Interesting non-fiction science novels are few and far between, but amongst those select few, “The Hot Zone” by Richard Preston stands tall. Richard Preston has made his career as an author writing about infectious disease and bioterrorism. It is a unique niche and one that seems to suit him well. It is important to remember however, that he is not a scientist nor is he a doctor. He is an author with a book to sell.
My assigned book is the hot zone by Richard Preston, the book demonstrates about a highly contagious and lethal virus that is known as “Ebola virus” that is divided into two types the Ebola Zaire and the Ebola Sudan. The writer also mentioned about other filo viruses such as the Marburg virus and rabies. The hot zone book illustrates the origins of the virus and how it started to disperse from one person to another or from a region to another. And how epidemiologists, scientists and doctors discovered about the origin, structure, the effect on the body, symptoms that it can cause, treatment or cure and the nature of the pathogen. As well as several cases of different patients that had an experience of the disease without knowing the actual

In the beginning of The Hot Zone By Richard Preston, readers are introduced to the appearance of a virus similar to Ebola that strikes in western Kenya during 1980 and eventually costs the life of Charles Monet, a Frenchman living by himself. When Monet and his friend travel to the Kitum Cave, he returns to his home and becomes ill on the seventh day. The author then describes Monet’s symptoms and illness in graphic details, providing a sense of terror for the readers. When a doctor named Shem Musoke treats Monet in the Nairobi Hospital, he develops the symptoms of the virus himself. Due to the fact Musoke feels particularly unwell after treating Monet, he is then opened up during an exploratory surgery and his liver appears to be red and
Nancy Jaax almost became infected when she tore her space suit while performing an autopsy on an infected monkey. Luckily she didn’t, but danger can happen around any corner. Even though Doctors new a lot about Ebola it was still very scary and unpredictable to work on. In life, Family can overcome everything as long as you believe and trust each other. In the story A Pox Upon Us All by Ralph Fletcher, a whole family struggles with 7 kids all sick. This story tells me that this family trust and loved each other through no matter what challenges they kept on pushing. A Pox Upon Us All teaches you that family can overcome anything. The story shows this when they are first sick,then recovers,then gets sick again One reason that I know this is in the story of A Pox Upon Us All ,the author states‘’We kids did everything together we sat at the same table,same food,breath the same air.
This book is really scary because it is factual, not fictional. Preston emphasizes the real dangers of Ebola and other filoviruses, but argues that the long lasting effects of the AIDS virus has not been determined. The book begins in Kenya in 1980. Preston describes the exposure and excruciating death of Charles Monet from the Marburg virus.
The community is scared of patients in quarantine and health consequences occur such as the inability to get food from the grocery store, go to the bank or write cheques and the victims are encouraged to stay indoors. This puts victims at risk for mental consequences such as depression and mental illnesses related to isolation. Health care workers risked their lives to interact and treat the victims in the story as well as an anonymous nurse who showed Bruce their support by leaving groceries outside his door (CBC, 2013). 5. The Ebola virus is spread through infected body fluids that get in your mucous membranes or breaks in the skin and it is only contagious when the infected individual presents with symptoms know as droplet spread.

As well as the experience that people had when the virus abruptly invaded Kenya and nearby countries, that caused an epidemic to pandemic outbreak. Also the ability for USAMRID team and SWAT soldiers to limit or to prevent the dispersion of the disease. Preston’s descriptions of the book were highly significant, because it makes you aware and attentive about the perilous situations that you might encounter, how to deal with Ebola virus, and in which aspects you should concentrate on.
He found Mary and discovered that she was a healthy carrier of typhoid. To prove his theory, he needed to take her specimens. Being a sanitation engineer George Soper did not have the power to take Mary 's specimens without her will. In order to do that Soper needed the power of NYC Health Commissioner. The Commissioner had the right to stop the spreading of the disease using science and tools of public health.
Is he a mad scientist? Okay, so he is not the inventor of the disease, because unlike the Red Death, there is believed to be a cause of Ebola; fruit bats. We live almost in a different world than those in third-world countries like Africa. They eat things we would never dream of, and surely they think the same about us. One of those things, are fruit bats.

We humans often consider ourselves to be apex predators, invincible thanks to our superior intelligence. Somewhere deep within our subconscious, there is an ever present awareness of danger, but it’s easier to ignore the notion. Thus, "the world is stable and life is secure" isn’t an unreasonable conclusion. At age twelve, I was living in this state of mind, content with not having to face the fragility of my existence, when I picked up Richard Preston’s The Hot Zone. The title page boasted that it was “a terrifying true story”.
