As an agricultural region, plantation owners in the South were large slave owners. To develop their economy, they needed a lot of cheap or even free labor. Slavery was not only a social institution for the South, it was more of an economic institution, even to say that it was the lifeblood of the South's economic and social development. In contrast, the situation in the North was quite different. With increasing European immigration, the North rapidly developed industrial and commercial sectors, such as textiles, coal, and steel. The northern states were very short on industrial labor while a large number of black labor was confined to the southern plantations.With the outbreak of the economic crisis in 1857, competition for labor between the North and the South became intense. Southerners believed that agriculture should be developed, but the North believed that industry and commerce were the future of the United States.
