In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, America was undergoing a great change during that time. America is still undergoing great change in present days. It is still undergoing great change, because the economy, self-respect, and the society status is changing the shape of America. In the book, landowners had a lot of land filled with fruits that had to be picked. Since their were a lot of migrants moving westward for a better living, the landowners hired the people that were coming over, but they weren't paid enough. The landowners were really greedy for money that they didn't see that some people weren't being fed. In present day, there is a similar problem. The landowners were obviously in the higher class and the migrants were in the lower class. If a migrant tries to act smart in front of the landowners then they would get in trouble. Migrants were laughed at and insulted by the landowners, the landowners literally controlled the migrants. They controlled them because they knew that the majority of them would work for them even if the pay was low, and if the pay is low then they will work twice as much to earn the money that they need. The migrants were never treated with respect, they were treated like slaves and the migrants couldn't do anything about it, because they needed money to feed their family. Many family in present day are going through the same situation, but the only difference is that most of the workers are respected and aren't treated like slaves.
