Edgar Allan Poe was the best at creating suspense and mood by keeping you interested with intense descriptions. He did a wonderful job at appealing to the readers sense of imagery by describing the catacombs. In Cask Of Amontillado, he goes into great detail of the walls of the catacombs by saying, "The drops of moisture trickle among the bones."
Edgar Allan Poe was an all around admired poet, but very few tend to actually learning about what made his horrific stories come to life. Many can say it was the loss of loved ones, including his parents and his wife. Others will argue that it was under the influence of alcohol. Although the reasoning is not written on paper, there is a worldwide assumption that all of these more than likely played a key factor in his dark

There are minor coincidences for the alcoholism theory but no solid evidence. Poe was found delirious outside of a Baltimore saloon in soiled clothes that didn’t fit him, he was unable to speak and the bartender took him in until his family got there to get him to a
Edgar Allan Poe’s frightening gothic style poetry and short novels about fear, love, death and horror are prominent to Gothic Literature and explore madness through a nerve-recking angle. The incredible, malformed author, poet, editor and novelist is recognized for his famous classical pieces such as “The Raven”, “Berenice” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”, pieces of work that mystically yet magnificently awakens readers with a gloomy spirit. Awakening the subject of madness through written work was viewed as insane during Poe’s times. Yet Poe published some of the worlds most magnificently frightening pieces of literature throughout history. In the following essay I will examine and cautiously analyze
We’ve all read stories before but not like Edgar Allen Poe’s, his stories will question everything you think and maybe even horrify you, but one things for certain you will never be unimpressed with is work “There is no exquisite beauty… without some strangeness in the proportion.” From this quote you can interpret many things. Poe 's life had various hardships that inspired his work. Pursuers can obviously observe the association with Poe and the other individuals throughout his life to the characters in his words and stories. Huge numbers of Poe 's works may appear to be typical to begin with, yet quite often end in disaster, primarily as his life did. Poe acted more as a literary motivation for others. He did not seek any artistic works for motivation, instead he acted more from his creative ability and the interactions he experienced.
Edgar Allan Poe’s use of literary devices to show the how fear of the characters in his stories are both helpful and harmful to them. Poe shows how the fears and obsessions of the narrators in his tales either lead to their inevitable death, or their miraculous survival. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his texts, such as symbols, ironies, and figurative language, to show the strange and distorted ways of the characters, and the repercussion of their fears and obsessions. The short stories “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner and Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” both have psychological similarities. These stories both use the effect of gothic literature to give the readers a more vivid picture of the characters dark, gloomy, and depressed feelings. Each main character in these two stories have a psychological trouble or guilt that is functioning in their brain. William Faulkner and Edgar Allen Poe both have been said to suffer from depression and it seems as they expressed their feelings throughout their writings, they also in a way put the negative feelings they possessed into these two characters. Gathering all the evidence, I believe that Edgar Allan Poe was a victim of schizophrenia. Although no one can be sure, considering no one was able to diagnose him, the symptoms do add up. Without all of our medical advances, no one can imagine what Poe went through his life. He may have let his feelings and thoughts flow into his numerous pieces of writing. Whether his feelings and emotions flowed into his writing, or he purposely wrote his stories like that, which would make him an even better writer.
Simply put, Sense of Self is our own Self Image. A character may not truly know who he is but he always knows who he thinks he is. This inward-looking view may be right on the mark or not even close. The difficulty a character has is that from inside himself it is impossible to be sure who he is. All he can do is take clues from the reaction of those around him.
Some influences that could have a possible effect on Poe could be the fact that he was brought up in bad conditions. His family was extremely poor and many of his family members had died from diseases and he had no father figure as he left early on in Poe’s childhood. Also he had witnessed the military and had enlisted before being removed from the army. He after failing at getting a degree and being in the army had lived the rest of his days writing. This might be an indication of why his gothic works are very unsettling and tense, because of the events he had noticed in his life.
Edgar Allan Poe’s story Is told from the Narrator’s point of view. That point of view was particularly effective for the The Tell-Tale Heart because, In Poe’s biography he was set out to be a person with a negative family background that led him to do mainly bad things. Such as drinking that will enable him to behave a way that he will later regret when sober. As per the narrator Poe was “morbidly sensitive to criticism, paranoid and belligerent when drunk”. Meaning he did not take to criticism easily and being under the influence of alcohol only intensified those emotions.

After his parents died, he lived with another family member who never accepted him as their own son. Later on in life, Poe had served in the military and at that point he started writing poems.
