The Life and Works of Edgar Allan Poe “The ideas and subjects expressed in Poe’s works are a reflection of his life and times.” Poe was a famous author during the 1800’s and wrote many of his well-known classics such as the “The Tell-Tale Heart”, “Annabel Lee”, and “The Raven”. During his times he dealt with the loss of his wife, Virginia. Due to the fact of all these tragic things he had been facing. He had turned to being an alcoholic and drinking to solve this problem. All these life experiences turn to creative poems from Poe. One of Poe's most vicious and mentally disturbing stories “The Tell-Tale Heart” is about a man who is mentally insane. He tries to kill an old man because he claims he has a so claimed “eye of the vulture.” He then dismembers the old man due to his insanity. Then his self-conscience brings it out of him then he confesses to the police the crime they were trying to solve was committed by him. This story of a murderous tale was believed to be based his mental state of mind after losing his loved one which was his dead wife Virginia ( Beers 89-94). They all depict the passing of someone this shows an obvious sign pointing to the death of his wife Virginia (Ebsco1). His wife Virginia, and his family had been his trigger to be an alcoholic. When he had been a teenager working at his job he would drink insane amounts alcohol which made him unfocused on his work. He had tried to quit off drinking but could not because he was suffering depression and he was an alcoholic (Ebsco1). His struggles he had faced and seen was the most terrifying and saddening.
