Think of your favorite story. Is one of them written by Edgar Allen Poe or Roald Dahl? These authors are very similar but they also have many differences. Edgar Allen Poe was one of the greatest horror short story writers of all time. Roald Dahl was famous for so many books that were for children, teens, and adults. These two authors were magnificent in their ability to write the stories that they did.

Edgar Allan Poe was born 1809 and died in 1849. His father left him and his mother had past away just before his third birthday. He was then adopted by the very wealthy Allen family who was from Richmond, Virginia. There, Poe was given a first-class education. Dahl was sent to boarding school at the age of nine. Some people thought that Dahl's dark experience of writing had to do with the fact that he had gone to two boarding schools. The violent and strict discipline that were at these schools never helped Dahl with his writing. When he was fourteen his English teacher had written on his report card, “I have never met a boy who so persistently writes the exact opposite of what he means.” Roald Dahl not only wrote aphotic humorous short stories, but he also wrote children's books. Dahl never actually started to write children's books until he had children of his own. Roald Dahl wrote most of books in a little shed that was located in his garden. Roald Dahl's first book was called “The Gremlins” published in 1943. Some other books that you may know are, “James and the Giant Peach”, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, and “Matilda.” Dahl was so creative that he started to make up his own words, for example oompa-loompas are small people that work at the Wonka factory. These words are found in Roald Dahl’s dictionary which is called the Gobblefunk dictionary. Dahl wrote seventeen children’s books and about nineteen adult books. He tended to base his characters on people that he had known in real life. For example the grandmother in his book, “The Witches”, is inspired by his mother, Sofie.
