The father of all scary movies, Edgar Allan Poe, was a very mysterious man even at his death. Poe wrote very many mysterious and spooky stories that set the standard for the horror genre as we know it today. It seems almost fitting that even Poe’s real life was mysterious, as nobody know for sure how he actually died.
How Edgar Allan Poe Portrays Insanity in The Raven A literary analysis by Viktor Wemmer - TE13C The Raven is arguably Edgar Allan Poe’s most famous work and it has been both criticised and praised by people all around the world. It revolves around an unnamed narrator who was half reading, half sleeping while trying to forget about his lost love Lenore, tells us about how he during a bleak December notices someone tapping on his chamber door, but when he gets up to answer there is no one there. The same sound later is heard coming from his window, and a raven flies into his room when he proceeds to open it.
Accounts seem to show he was fine in the last month but then abruptly Poe’s health declined and later died. The logic of the situation is proved for if Poe got the Rabies infection before where no one knew about it why he suddenly seemed ill. This also ties in with the article “ Rabies Death Theory” in which it claims “ … in the United States there have been 33 reported cases of human rabies, yet only 24 percent of these victims could recall an appropriate history of animal exposure”( The New York Times). This would explain why Poe had never mentioned a Rabies Bite and couldn’t recall such an event. The small percentage rate of people that remember Rabies bites would also explain why in Poe’s time period no one would suggest his death to cause of rabies.

The reason for his demise has been unsolved, because of the many different sources explaining his death. From what I 've learned from reading counts of Poe 's death, I 've concluded that Edgar Allen Poe died of rabies, rather than alcoholic intoxication. The reason why I believe it is rabies is because his symptoms were too severe and life threatening to be related to just alcohol. One reason of why I believe Poe died of rabies is because he exhibited signs and symptoms of late effects of rabies.
Perhaps it was not that Poe was drunk, yet crazed - the resulting effect of rabies. According to Doctor Henry Wilde, Edgar had all of the features of encephalitic rabies. Although it might be coincidental, it is very much possible. After being brought to a hospital, Poe had been hallucinating, heavily perspiring, and shouting at imaginary companions on the walls. "I become insane with long intervals of horrible sanity" (Poe), said the misguided poet.
The one that stands out the most is Poe not being able to drink water. If you do not know the effects of rabies, it turns your body into one giant muscle spasm. Poe shows how the fears and obsessions of the narrators in his tales either lead to their inevitable death, or their miraculous survival. Edgar Allan Poe uses many literary devices in his texts, such as symbols, ironies, and figurative language, to show the strange and distorted ways of the characters, and the repercussion of their fears and obsessions. In Poe’s stories, a literary device he uses frequently throughout his stories, are symbols.
Gathering all the evidence, I believe that Edgar Allan Poe was a victim of schizophrenia. Although no one can be sure, considering no one was able to diagnose him, the symptoms do add up. Without all of our medical advances, no one can imagine what Poe went through his life. He may have let his feelings and thoughts flow into his numerous pieces of writing. Whether his feelings and emotions flowed into his writing, or he purposely wrote his stories like that, which would make him an even better writer.
