No one knew what happened to Poe after he disappeared. He was later found in a Tavern on October 3rd, he was stupefied and drunk wearing someone else's clothes and an expression of vacant stupidity. His friends took him to the Washington College Hospital where he was cared for. The next morning he was pale and sweating profusely, and talking randomly. Doctors claimed that Poe had stayed in that state until October 7th when he said “Lord help my poor soul” and died. Many believe Poe had died from three possibilities: he had alcohol poisoning, he was mentally ill, or he died of rabies.

This conspiracy seems to make more sense. While needing to realize the 1800’s was when there were no cars, paved roads that took you from coast to coast, and hotels in every town. Like I have said before Poe was a very poor man. He had taken a trip from Baltimore, Massachusetts, to Richmond, Virginia. He was too poor to afford a horse, a carriage, and even what would be considered an inn. A trip in the wilderness from Baltimore to Richmond took months to complete. If Poe faced any dangers it would have been freezing to death, and being attacked by a rabid animal. Rabies just like tuberculosis was common when they didn’t have a cure, and many people died from it. Those who have rabies have distinct signs: they are delirious, they cannot drink water, and they act like they are drunk. When Poe was admitted to the hospital all of these signs showed. The one that stands out the most is Poe not being able to drink water. If you do not know the effects of rabies, it turns your body into one giant muscle spasm. If Edgar Allan Poe was to have drank water he could have choked and died. Doctors recorded that one of the signs Poe had made, was every time he was offered water he refused to drink
