It is the dead hour of night, all is silent but the constant beat of the old man’s heart. The mad man soon attacks. This is the story of Tell Tale Heart. By Edgar Allen Poe. The story takes place in an old man’s house.
Poe uses symbolism a lot in his stories to make his writing have a more eerie feeling. ”The Tell-Tale Heart” and “Masque of Red Death” both have symbols that induce fear into the main characters hearts. In The Tell-Tale Heart Poe writes “...for it was no the old man who vexed me but his evil eye “(75).The narrator kills an innocent old man for that hr thought the old man's eyes were judging. Although the old man just had cataracts ,the narrator could not stand the man for his eye he compared looked as vulture's eye. The narrator was afraid of this old man and his “evil eye”.
Just because Edgar Allan Poe died in 1849, that hasn’t stopped people of today from being obsessed with his creepy, suspenseful poems. Poe’s writing has inspired over 250 ideas for film and television. Since his work is so timeworn, it’s open to the public domain to be adapted for amateur writers and filmmakers. His questionable writing has made many people uncomfortable during his time and still today. Even though many popular television shows have recreated and told Poe’s frightening stories like the Halloween episode of “The Simpsons” by far the creepiest one was surprisingly a cartoon short of “The Tell Tale Heart”.
The Raven crafts the idea of suspense by using a range of different types of literary features. The use of hyperboles creates more suspense because the more exaggeration used grips the reader in more. Describing the Raven as “Ghastly, Grim and ancient” (8) makes the idea that the author is trying to get through, more coherent as Poe is offering more description. The way Poe repeats his “Sorrow for the lost Lenore” (2) helps embed the idea that he misses Lenore but it also makes the reader wonder where she went, why she left and why she is so important, which creates suspense. The way Poe uses repetition and pathos when he is trying to get an idea through is very prominent.
In this era of movies and stories we have better graphics and word choice to make the stories more scary. Unlike now they did not have this in 1963 and 1843. But still the people who made it feel like it was a modern day story was Edgar Allan Poe and Alfred Hitchcock. One way they created suspense was by using foreshadowing to give a hint of what's coming next. Another way they created suspense is by using different wording than we would use than modern talking slang/wording.
Will Smith once said, “The only place that fear can exist is in our own thoughts of the future.” This quote is saying people worry too much about the future they theoretically fear themselves to death. Edgar Allen Poe and Washington Irving use many different literary elements to create tension and suspense in their stories. But it can lead to paranoia, paralyzing you to the point where you can’t act. If you obsess over it too much, you won’t be able to enjoy life to the fullest.
When you watch a tv show and do you find it annoying when they go to commercial break right before something important is about to happen? That is an example of suspense. You usually sit through the commercials to see what happens right? It keeps you hooked. The short story that I will be referring to and drawing examples of suspense from is Pickman’s Model by H.P. Lovecraft.
The man says, “You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing.” Tying in with the arrogant tones as well, the man has a very dark mind and the readers get a glimpse of his thought train through first person. He explains he needs to “take the life of the old man and thus rid myself of the eye forever.” No sane person would kill over a color of an eye, but as he describes the old man’s eye, the audience begins to understand why he takes the life of the old man.
The movie Psycho by the Oscar nominated and "master of suspense" Alfred Hitchcock is by far the best suspense/thriller movie that I have ever seen. It is amazing how a movie filmed in 1960 in black and white can turn out to be better than a movie filmed with color in the twenty first century. How Alfred Hitchcock thought of ways to create suspense and infused them in the movie is truly amazing. The techniques that I saw Alfred Hitchcock use to create suspense in Psycho were different camera shots and angles, creepy music, jump scares, and foreshadowing. The different camera shots and angles that Alfred Hitchcock used were the principal techniques that created suspense.
This passage is applicable to my claim because it clarifies how the foreshadowing is shown. The narrator cries about how frightening the ominous eye is, and how paranoid it has left him. He chuckles about how perfectly sane he is, even though he sounds like a madman. Poe creates a suspenseful atmosphere by foreshadowing the narrator’s fear of the old man’s eye.
The Black Cat is written by Edgar Allan Poe, who has written much in the past. He was always questioned about how reliable his stories were in the past, but in this story it brings major attention to the reasons why. In the story the narrator states “…a series of mere household events. In their consequences, these events have terrified - have tortured - have destroyed me.” In that quote it shows that his past life affected his actions that took place in The Black Cat.

No sane person would think of doing such a thing, they would just avoid seeing the old man. Instead, the narrator chooses to kill the old man which does not make sense to the average, but to him, this is the only way to relieve himself of the eye.
