Edgar Allen Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston Massachusetts. His father abandoned the family when Poe was only one and his mother died a year later. The family that adopted him wasn’t financially stable which resulted in Poe having to drop out of college after only one semester because of financial instability. He also failed at becoming an officer’s cadet at West Point. Despite this, Poe later became a renowned American author best known for his short stories. He was one of the first authors to write short stories, which led to a continually difficult career because it didn’t pay well, yet he continued writing despite this. My initial reaction to the content of the story is why the Angel of the Odd goes after the man. Poe is basically writing that the man couldn’t have his opinion on the outcomes of a story without getting a punishment. Despite this, I found the overall storytelling of the story very humorous because no matter what the man couldn’t catch a break. I think Poe named this story the way he did because people usually look for angels for guidance and assistance. Also, the odd represents the misfortunes that the main character faces. Therefore, with the guidance and assistance in addition to the misfortunes I think that Poe named the story “The Angel of the Odd” because of this. “The Spectacles” by Edgar Allen Poe tells the story of a wealthy man’s refusal to wear glasses after spotting a gorgeous woman at the opera. My thoughts of this content is mixed between the good and the bad. I like Poe’s style of writing in this with his use of creative detail and romanticism, however I see many negatives that extremely frustrate me. For example, if narrator had just put on glasses despite his stubbornness then the whole situation with the old woman could have been
