What do you think when you hear the name Edgar Allan Poe? A creepy poet? The author of the impossible-to-comprehend Raven poem? A madman? Poe was an accomplished writer and poet, and was famous for his gruesome manner. He had a hard family life, and his craze blew up after his loving wife died. Yet, Poe is still popular for his gruesome tales, and bloody literacy. Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. Poe never really knew his parents. He was separated from his siblings, and went to live with an adoptive family. Poe was close with his adoptive mom, but not so much with his dad. He had a cottage in The Bronx, New York, and he lived by himself. Poe lived here until he died, writing some of his most famous stories and poems, including The Cask of Amontillado. Some experiences that shaped Poe as an adult included his time as an editor and writer, which shaped his post-death fame like never before. Yet the experience that shaped Poe most was the death of his beloved wife Virginia. This killed Poe’s soul so much, and probably inspired Poe for his horrific poetry and writing. Poe’s wife and cousin Virginia helped Poe by loving him, and encouraging him. When Poe lived with his aunt and his cousin, he fell in love with his young cousin Virginia, and they married when Poe was 37 and Virginia was 13. Poe’s loving wife died after eleven years of marriage with Poe. Virginia even continued to help Poe after her death, though, because Poe’s devastation led to his dark but popular poems and stories. Challenges that Poe faced included the hardship of pursuing a literary career. Once in New York, Poe struggled to earn money, and Poe eventually fought for more righteous payment for people of the arts
