Monsters are created not born. Violent tendencies do not manifest from thin air. In other words, “Our ethical convictions do not spring fully grown from our heads but must be developed in the context of real and imagined challenges” (Asma 10). Edmund’s monster manifested as consequence of the abuse at the hands of an alcoholic mother. The continual abuse fueled his hatred for his uncaring mother. At an early age, he began having dreams of murdering her. He often mutilated dolls and “cut off their heads” (Biography). This was just the start. On Psychology Today, Gail F. Nelson PhD writes, animal abuse may be an early warning sign of a future mass killer, later on stating, “childhood animal abuse is linked to other forms of violence and psychopathology.” …show more content…

He first shot and killed Cindy Schall, dismembered her body, and threw her into the ocean. But just like a zombie, they never stop they just keep striking never sated. Using the same memo, he murdered two more young women. This time he disposed of them in several different locations. His rage and animalistic tendencies continued to simmer after these murders. It ultimately boiled over in his final two murders. It is here where he decided to end the cause of his monstrous killings…his mother. His darkest fantasies and dreams of killing her came to the surface of his unstable mind. This killer, unlike Asma, believed he could get rid of his monster. Kemper’s anger erupted upon his mother. He beat her in the head with a hammer, slit her throat, and dismembered her. He thought that he had ended his lifelong monster that had abused him as a small child. Edmund’s sadistic mind is consumed by his relentless anger towards his mother. Here, it seems as though he is void of realizing that sometimes the monster lies within. Kemper continued his rage by strangling his mom’s best friend to death ending his murdering spree. It seems as though he bathed in the glory of his murders like a kid winning a trophy. For example, after being on the run, he eventually called the police himself recounting and confessing to each crime.
