Edna Pontellier is a strong, independent female character stuck in a society, depicted in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, which oppresses women. Edna constantly struggles with her growing realization of her restricted life style and her desire to be free from societal expectations. Chopin describes moments of Edna’s sleep (or a lack thereof) to allude to her “awakening” out of the stereotypical view of women.
