Pecha Kucha Script As studies show, only 38 percent of on-reserve students finish high school, literacy rates are half the Canadian average, and the youth suicide rate is seven times the Canadian average. In Canadian prisons, ⅓ are Indigenous women and ¼ are Indigenous males. Indigenous children represents the face of Canadian child welfare and Indigenous homelessness is everywhere. Some people say that it is their education that is the root cause. Like many other services the government offers them, like water and housing maintenance, it lacks funding and attention. However, the federal government spends well over $1 billion annually educating aboriginal children that in Nova Scotia, for example, received $9 000 per student in 2012. Going to school in Sutherland Secondary School in Northern Vancouver in 1980s, he talks about how only there were two Indigenous students in the whole school, him and his brother. All the rest of the students were European. So as his story goes, when he was asked which part of Italy he was from, he went home and searched for a small town in Italy to tell his friends. The lie he said just to fit in caused him many nights of crying himself to sleep. Until after 15 months, he finally found the courage to tell his friends that he was Squamish. His father, a survivor of the Residential schools, loss his identity while being in the residential school, on the other hand, in the 15 months Baker lied, he too loss his identity. The loss of an identity, regardless whether you are Indigenous or not is very difficult. It affects not only the person struggling but also their relationships with the people around
