Thinking about my future classroom and the structure and organization I will put into order, I realize that this will depend largely on what kind of students I have in my classroom. I recognize that as a teacher, I will play a tremendous role in guiding my students. Many may not have much of a structured life at home. Some may not have a mother figure and result in being the mother figure themselves! Depending on their age, a student will be required to assume different levels of responsibility. As I ponder on the topic of responsibility, and how I am to incorporate it into the school setting, I think about my childhood and how my mother has distributed responsibility. Not only did I have the responsibility of cleaning up after myself and taking care of myself, I was now assigned responsibilities that affected those around me. I would be in charge of setting the table, unloading the dishwasher, organizing a specific room in the house, or dust. I learned that not only did these things profit me, but the contributed to the success of others. The same teaching steps would occur. First, showing me how to do it, then assisting me, then observing. As I got older, more responsibility was added. I became more responsible for all of my actions, was supposed to recognize how what I did affected others, and became more aware of what my responsibilities were. In my seminary class, each student has at least one responsibility. Mine is called “nice noter” and I am to write nice notes to people in the classroom when I notice something noteworthy. Other jobs include a person who writes on the board, a birthday crew, and even people who are supposed to greet the other students as they arrive to class. All of these tasks, though small, contribute to a very effective environment. With the older children, I plan to execute a plan similar by giving them individual tasks to be kept and cultivated.
