In Edward Bellamy’s book “Looking Backwards” the main character is julian west and he is from the 19th century. He is 30 years old and lives in a time where the rich stay and the poor stay poor basically. Though there are some privileged that want to help they are still worried about their pockets. How the book goes off is Julian suffers from insomnia and because of this he is sent asleep in a underground chamber. With the help of a sleep doctor called Pillsbury, he mesmerized him into a deep and his servant never awaken him. When he awakens it is the year 2000. This culture is far greater than what he was used too. Everything in this world is different, the economy is far better. The United States is its own nation, there are no more political groups and over powered, greedy, and evil public officials. The government has completely turned this society around, there is equality, peace,and change. He makes this story more of a dream than a reality. Well first off he was was mesmerized to sleep so that right there tells me this is a dream because it says in the text, he wakes up in the year 2000 from 1887. Then when he goes on to tells us how the government works and everything is perfect almost, this is a dream like quality because everyone does right almost like there is no sin. As far as international relations like trading and buying from one nation to another, there is no such thing in this world he is in.
