Moving into the discussion of Edward Hallowell’s book Shine, this proves the topic of choosing the correct people for the right job. As a student, I read the book “Foundations of Human Resource Development Course.” This section is going to go more in-depth of Hallowell’s book and how it will pertain to my future career endeavors. This book was the focal point of the class, and I believe it offered valued information for any employer or employee. There are three criteria that a leader can take into consideration when selecting a candidate. The first criteria are thinking about the job being something the individual would be good at performing. Secondly, is the job something the candidate likes to do. The last criteria to think about is, is it something that will add value to the job or the company. When a person is selected for the right job, based on these criteria, it creates a recipe for excellence. Selection is the first step in Hallowell’s cycle because it influences all the other steps that follow. Even through selecting the right job, some people get stuck in that position, ultimately being the wrong job. Two reasons that can cause a person to select the wrong job can be from selecting based off of benefits and salary or selecting a career based on what family or friends think is best. Hallowell states (2011), “Pick the right dream, examine it, and make sure it is a dream that suits you well enough that you will want to work hard, very hard, to make it come true, and also make sure that even if it doesn’t come true, you will feel glad and proud that you pursued it anyway” (p.46).
