Edward Hopper creates a work of art that depicts a late night scene. There is a lone woman staring into a cup of hot beverage in what looks like a cafe. The room seems empty and compared to the stark blackness outside, it is also brightly lit. She is wearing a green winter coat that has a fur collar and cuffs, suggesting the painting takes place during the cold autumn and winter months. She wears a yellow hat which is pulled low over her head. She does not appear to be smiling. She is holding the cup with her bare hand while her other hand is in a black glove. Those feelings are further evoked by the woman’s extremely fair skin and composition of the artwork. There is asymmetrical balance because the foreground has more elements in view and therefore looks more weighted compared to the emptiness of the background. There is also a vertical balance because there is much activity going on in the foreground while the background looks almost blank. There is a contrast in colour mostly around the woman, as her coat is green and the bowl of fruits directly behind her a combination of reds and yellows. Because of that, it is evident that the focal point of this artwork is the woman. She is also placed in the foreground off to the right side and possess the most details in terms of colour and tonal range. Hopper creates flow by the use of geometric shapes which provide imagery but are still harmonious with the whole artwork. There is a repetition of round, organic shapes in the table, the fruits, the floor heater and the reflected light fixtures. This is a contrast to the sharp angles of the walls and windows. The colours of the artwork are bold and the focal point in the woman is further proved by her bare white legs and her cup.
