Having gone through hardship and change, Baba and Amir moved to America to escape the dangers of their home in Afghanistan. Living in America impacted these characters in several ways that readers can see. Amir was impacted in a more positive way since his past is so far away, allowing him to bury his memories and make new ones that are much happier with Baba. Baba on the other hand is impacted negatively since he misses his home and old way of life. Moving away from home and leaving everything behind is a dramatic change for both characters but its effects on them are drastically different. He was marveled by the country’s size and its vastness. Amir states that, “America was a river, roaring along, unmindful of the past” (pg. 136). This shows the difference between his old home and America. In Afghanistan, he would see constant reminders of his years growing up; having constant reminders of the past that haunts him. In America, it is such an immense land of new experiences that it drowns out his past. His residency over time had also improved his confidence. Having to decide on his own what to do for college against his father is unlike the young Amir seen at the start of the novel. Amir states that; “…I will stand my ground…I didn’t want to sacrifice for Baba anymore” (pg. 135). Having understood his past and learning from it after Hassan’s sacrifice, Amir moves forward in his life the way he would like it to be. Amir in Kabul was very self-centered yet when he starts adapting to America, he becomes a more self-less and moral character. He takes care of his father until he passes and finds a compassionate wife to begin his adult life with. His change in character can be seen when he travels back to Kabul to find Sohrab. His experiences in America led up to himself finally confronting his guilt with his confrontation of Assef and rescuing
