The writings during the Harlem Renaissance had many different themes and claims to provide, but, the most important one is that the community and collaboration during the Harlem Renaissance had a great impact on people in the past and still does today. During the Harlem Renaissance, there were many hardships that people had to face. One of them being segregation. In this poem, the author talks about how her teacher told her to have hope and move on. In the text, it says, “I feel full of something strange and delicious: hope.” “Teacher is right. The past is a ladder that can help you keep climbing.” (lines 7-13) This quote shows that her teacher was able to give her advice about finding hope and using the past to help her move forward. Using the advice from her teacher she is now able to move on. She sees her sister in the living room looking sad. She then comforts her sister and lets her know that everything is going to be okay. To prove this, the text says, “I find my sister in the living room, surprise her with a tight squeeze and a swing into the air. “We’re going to be all right, sis,” I whisper. “You and me, we’re going to be okay.” “I know life will be rough but we got the stuff to make it.” lines (14-24) This explains how she was able to move on with the help of her teacher and how she comforts her sister, saying that everything will be alright and that they will get through it even if it is hard. This poem is about a man who is not happy and needs to ease his mind. The author talks about the things that he use to do to cheer him up and calm him down. Mckay mentions in the text that he can “laugh and love and watch with wonder-eyes, at golden noon the forest fires burn.” (lines 2-4) He also mentions how doing this will ease the long years of pain he has been through. To support this it says, “To ease my mind of long, long years of pain.” (line 14) These two quotes are conveying that if he does the things that he loves and enjoys, it will help him enjoy his life and make him happier.
