The black-and-white short film, directed by Luis Buñuel (in collaboration with Salvador Dalí), was well received by critics for it focused on continuing the approach of Surrealism by destabilizing bourgeois society and give vent to repressed and deep thoughts that resides in a person’s psyche. For instance, the film is truly bold and impactful to being a theme of irrationality when it focuses in on clear shots, such as a razor slices a woman's eyeball, grand pianos with dead cattle are dragged across a bourgeois sitting room, or even the scene when ants scurry in and out of a hole in a man's hand; these particular scenes are excellent examples of shock art for they make an audience feel extremely disturbed when viewing (this was shown in and received this way when viewed in class), yet it’s shot in a way to put the viewer deep in thought to record what all happened.
