The Treaty of the Versailles (an international body intended to promote peace and prevent war) ended the WWI in 1919(Judd 1972:sp). Germany and its allies were defeated in the WWI. The treaty held Germany responsible pay for the damages caused in the war (Coltheart 2011: sp). During that time, the world was suffering from the Great Depression. It affected some other countries severely and led to poverty. Man people starved, some lost their jobs, farms and homes (Smiley (2008:sp).

Regardless of the Great Depression, Germany had to take responsibility. Germany had to pay 132 billion gold marks and marked 26% of the value of German exports (Fischer 2010:7). This left Germany’s economy bankrupt and embarrassed. The people of Germany starved and
