Having self-interest is part of being human and “the purpose of morality, she argues, is to teach us what is in our self-interest, what produces happiness”, this sentence also ties with the words “self” and “ego”. Having an ego or being an egoist has its limits, though. People should care for themselves, but also care for others because ego is more of a balance in which one can’t work without the other. The beneficial side of ego is that it “constitutes the essential identity of a human being” (Rand Introduction) but the detrimental side, according to visionlaunch.com, is that it can “completely eliminate objectivity”.
The word ego is defined as “A person’s self-esteem or self-importance”. Everybody in the world has a different level of ego. Some have very high self worth, while others have very low self worth. This means an ego sets us all apart and makes us different. An egoist is defined as “A doctrine that individual self-interest is the valid end of all actions.”
Ego is a weed we cultivate for it to ultimately be destroyed. It is said to be the root of our sins, but is really the cause of individuality in this world. Egoists tend to separate themselves from others; we made egos to experience ourselves as different, rather than the ordinary being. Egos are depicted to reflect a bad connotation. In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, the protagonist, Equality 7-2521, is an egoist, but not in the way expected.

There is a direct link between self respect and an individual's response to injustice. When someone treats us poorly, we might feel the need to fight back because of our self respect, but if we don't we’re letting people control and take advantage of us. It's about proving our self worth and equality amongst our peers. In the novel “Hamlet”, Shakespeare has created this man Hamlet who's father the king has been slain by his uncle Claudius, who is now wed to his mother Gertrude. Before all of this happened hamlets life was perfect, he was going to school and had a lovely girlfriend, heir to the throne.
I agree when Rachels says that the best argument in establishing Ethical Egoism as a viable theory of morality is Thomas Hobbes principle that we should do unto others because if we do, others will more likely to do unto us (Pojman and Vaughn, 2014, pg. 527). People should avoid harming others because we should care about the interests of other people for the very same reason we care about our own interests; for their needs and desires are comparable to our own (Pojman and Vaughn, 2014, pg. 532). The way people think about you versus your own feeling about yourself. In William Shakespeare's dramatic play, Hamlet, people's appearances to other people and how they really feel are two different things as seen in the play. One character, Hamlet, how he presents himself and how he really feels are two different things. The way that he appears to other people is that he is recovering from the death of his father in a good way and has a great relationship with his mother and now step-dad. The way that he really feels is that he is not happy and needs help, but no one notices.
In the final scene of Hamlet, Hamlet says “Being thus be-netted round with villainies, -- Ere I could make a prologue to my brains, they had begun the play” (Shakespeare 131). Hamlet ironically thinks to himself as a character in a play because he is so melodramatically self-conscious. By adding this sense of paradoxical exposure, Shakespeare shows his effort to foreground the fact that the audience is watching a play within the play. Since Hamlet is such a rich character, Shakespeare’s work shows how he has something within him goes beyond what a play is capable of representing.
Pride. To be able to take great satisfaction in one’s life or achievements. Pride can be the cause for people to do great things so they can have a good reputation or be respectable; however, pride can be the beginning to hatred, evil, and of course, one’s downfall. Pride is known to be the worst sin there was and also the sin in which all other sins arise from. In Shakespeare’s play Hamlet this negative effect of pride is shown perfectly throughout the whole play.
Conscience is inner critical thinking about one’s behavior and acts of rightfulness or wrongfulness- this can affect how one deals with death and the idea of an afterlife by subconsciously guiding one to act a certain way to obtain the ‘promised afterlife’ in the Christian religion. In the time of Shakespeare- the Elizabethan era, the two main religions were Catholic and Protestant, the reader can see influences of religion throughout Shakespeare’s Hamlet. In ‘Hamlet’, the Christian concepts of one’s conscience, death and afterlife are demonstrated through Hamlet and supporting characters. Shakespeare gives these Christian concepts a larger meaning. Religion adds uncertainty and fear to a character’s decision making process.
“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark” (I.v.90). Hamlet is about a young prince who is mourning the loss of his father. He then tries to seek revenge on his uncle Claudius because he poisoned his father. Throughout the play Hamlet’s behavior starts to change which causes him to become mad. The theory about all this is a Psychological Approach.
