The Mesopotamian and Hebrew societies lived in two very distinct sphere of influence, as they were Polytheist and monotheist, respectably. This difference ensured that each society would operate using different methods. The Gods ruling over the Mesopotamian people were extremely negative toward their subjects. Each group of Mesopotamians from the Sumerians to the Babylonians had different names for their gods; however, the gods operated in similar roles. Mesopotamian gods acted with the same feelings, attitudes, and dispositions as humans.
Both the Mesopotamians and Chavin had polytheistic beliefs. The Mesopotamians built their cities around temples, which is similar to what the Chavin did. This centralized everything around worshiping their gods. They had high status level priests that were responsible for appeasing the gods in favor of themselves and other people in their society. The Mesopotamians would ask their gods for rain to help their crops because they believed that their deities controlled the climate.

During the bronze age both Ancient Mesopotamians and Ancient Egyptians developed forms of religion that highly reflected their habitat. They had many similarities in their politics even though they had completely different forms of government. Both societies were also known for their discoveries in art and technology. They developed their own forms of writing, different tools and architecture.
In Mesopotamia they had new inventions. For example they had the wheel, the sail, and the plow. In Egypt they had came up with the idea of pyramids. The pyramids were built by slaves and other workers. The pyramids were made for the Pharaohs or the Egyptian god-kings.
Mesopotamians believed in many gods, but there were main gods that were worshiped in major events. The people pleased the gods to gain blessings, and anyone who annoyed them was brutal punished. They also believed in hierarchies, and it was a compulsory for juniors to be submissive to their seniors (Somervill). In the ancient world, the Mesopotamian religion was polytheist. The Mesopotamians thought they were created as servants of their gods and goddesses. They built big temples known as Ziggurats to worship them and keep them content. If someone in Mesopotamia was suffering from an illness or received a punishment, Mesopotamians thought they had committed some offense against their gods. Compared to the Mesopotamian religion, the Egyptian was polytheist, but also pantheist because some of their gods represented natural phenomena as rain, sun and rivers.
Religion played an important role in civilization as government laws and divine kingship derived from it. Both civilizations were quite similar, but acquired some differences unique to each civilization. These differences include the environment, divine kingship, and sense of security from either nature or law. The idea and practices of ancient Mesopotamia originated from the Sumerians. Moreover, both Mesopotamian and Egyptian civilization diffused their practices and ideas to other ancient civilizations like the Hebrews and the Greeks.
As we can see even dated back to 3000 b.c religion has always played an imperative role in society. Even to this day society shares different points of views, whether it’s subjective or not. The vast majority of society who developed during ancient civilization era were centered around their own belief system, while the Mesopotamians and Egyptians rendered no difference. Both Egyptians and Mesopotamians were polytheistic, in the sense they believed the world was ruled by multiple gods.
Some of the major differences can be seen in the ideas of origin and the meaning of life. In today’s society, as a whole, most do not believe that the world was created because various gods were fighting or because a monster of chaos was destroyed. In a modern, Christian worldview, we believe God created us and the earth and that He genuinely cares for us. For us, the meaning of life is similar in the idea that happiness is a goal; however, we find meaning in what we do and how we impact others. The Mesopotamians on the other hand never gave much evidence to support the idea that they were invested in the people around them and making their lives better along with their own.
