Before Civilizations came about people were nomads, traveling from place to place searching for food. When people learned to farm, they started to settle down. This is how the first villages were formed. At times, Farmers would have food surpluses, which would stimulate population growth. Eventually, because of the increase in population, these villages became cities. Due to these surpluses of food, not all people had to be farmers and they could work different jobs. This helped create civilizations. Civilizations were led by strong leaders who conquered other cities and formed empires. Due to the conflicts within the expansion, the republic was weakened and finally destroyed. By 133 B.C. Rome controlled the territories from Spain to Egypt. The conquests brought great treasures to Rome. Once the Republic started to weaken, strong and powerful dictators emerged. In 14 A.D., after half a millennium, The Republic finally fell, leading the way to “the age of the Roman Empire.” For entertainment of Roman citizens, gladiators would fight to the death. Most of them would fight in the Colosseum which was built from 72 A.D. to 80 A.D. Ancient Rome was a busy, bustling, noisy city whose streets were paved with cobblestone. Rome was abundant with impressive architecture such as the Forum, Trajan’s Column, The Great Square of the Colosseum, the Temples of Saturn and Concord, the Basilica Aemilia most of which stand as ruins today. If you were a patrician you enjoyed a great amount of wealth. You usually bathed at home in your own bath. You had slaves to care for your house and cook for you. You ate three course meals consisting of a starter of eggs, shellfish, or some vegetables; a main course with meat and vegetables, and fruit or pastry for dessert. Patricians had beautiful courtyards with ornate fountains. The sons of patricians were educated by their own tutor at home. The daughters of patricians received much less education and were expected to be married at a young
