How Did Baseball Impact The Latino Community In Hartford
America has always had a deep connection with sports. Starting in 1839, America began its love affair with what is now deemed America’s favorite pastime, baseball. Beginning in Cooperstown, New York it quickly spread across the country creating a community around the team. Baseball came to Connecticut in 1874 when Hartford had an early major league team that shifted into several minor league teams that still exist today. While baseball is taking off in Hartford, a city just outside of Hartford is forming.
Review Of Rodolfo 'Gonzales' Speech: The Chicano Nationalist Movement
During the Chicano Nationalist Movement, a well-known speaker, Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales, delivered a speech titled Chicano Nationalism: Victory for La Raza. In this speech, Rodolfo Gonzales tries to unify the Latin American people within the United States by using the idea of a family and to create a new political organization for the Chicano people. This speech was a cumulation of various ideas which stemmed from his own life, the experiences of the Chicano people, and the Chicano Nationalist Movement in general. Each of these factors contributed to the context of the speech and how the ideas within the speech are presented by Rodolfo Gonzales. Rodolfo ‘Corky’ Gonzales was born to Federico and Indalesia Gonzales, two Mexican immigrants, on June 18, 1928.
Latinos Reinvent The US City By Mike Davis
Mike Davis. Magical Urbanism: Latinos Reinvent the U.S. City. In his book Magical Urbanism: Latinos Reinvent the U.S. City, first published in 2000, Mike Davis explores the various ways through which Latinx communities in America have influenced the urban landscape. Davis uses statistics and his own analyses thereof to argue that, despite the fact that Latinos are largely ignored by American cultural discourse because “The living color of the contemporary big city… is still viewed on an old-fashioned black-and-white screen”, that Latinos are central to the globalizing urban landscape (Davis, 9).
Statement Of Purpose: Chicano Studies
In high school I was able to choose an elective that had great appeal to me- Chicano Studies. This was a new course at my high school, it was providential for me that the course became available because of the large impact it had on my life. In this course we studied, the history of Mexico and its influence on current culture, past civil rights leaders, and the topic that struck me the most, current events. Our teacher, Mr. Pisano, expressed his alacrity to teach the course to the administration at our high school, and with appeal he was able to teach one section of the course.

The Chicano movement derives from early oppression of Mexicans. Robert Rodrigo, author of “The Origins and History of the Chicano Movement” acknowledges that, “At the end of the Mexican American war in 1848, Mexico lost half of its territory to the United States and its Mexican residents became ‘strangers in their own lands.’” In stating this fact, Rodrigo exemplifies the United States’ relations with Mexico, that, ultimately, led to their oppression. Moreover, these early relations led to social injustice for the Mexican community. The Chicano And Puerto Rican Movements Of The 1900s
Injustice and inequality often ignite the sparks of social and political movements. The Chicano (Mexican-American) and Puerto Rican movements of the 1900s provide such examples. Latinos are often considered a homogeneous and involved political subsection or as Beltrán describes a ‘sleeping giant.’ The metaphor describes a sleeping giant who contains much political control through its sheer size but does little with its power. Mexican-Americans and Puerto Ricans have historically proven this metaphor wrong and mobilized in great numbers to affect real change within their respective communities.

It is an honor to be nominated for the National Honor Society. The fact that I was nominated proves to me that all of my hard work and dedication has not been for nothing. On the other hand, co-cultures also promote their own set of values which could easily shape our ideas about certain matters as well. One of my biggest supporters are my parents. Selena appeared at a time when the Hispanic community desperately needed someone to remind them of their roots. Many Mexican Americans born in the 1900s were not accepted, and were practically invisible to the community. 1990s Chicanos and Latinos in America were facing a lot of legislation across the country that would leave them excluded and often times without any rights. Having someone in the entertainment business for Latin Americans to identify with caused a sense of pride, and a sense of belonging. Other reasons being their lack of cultural knowledge.

During my two interviews my with my two people of the Hispanic culture I came to find they were both had a good level of health literacy from a quick glance. It’s interesting I came to this conclusion fast after asking them each their questions, because I barely know these two on a personal level. Raul I met last year at comicpalooza, where we bonded over love over television and movies and came in contact since, mostly having conversations about show/movies; but never had conversations on anything like this level. Francis I met over swim class this fall at UH recreation center, so I came to the conclusion to pick two people I didn’t really know to ask these questions for this paper.
