For my cultural project I chose to go to the Dia de los Muertos Contemporary Art and Altar Exhibit by Nopal Cultural at the Eiteljorg Museum . Upon entering Lilly Auditorium, where the exhibit was held I immediately noticed 12 small altars and one large altar in the back. All of the smaller altars where dedicated to different people. Some of the people featured in the altars include: Mexican singer and songwriter Juan Gabriel, calculus teacher James Escalantes, and Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low. All of the altars were done by different groups or individuals within the community, just as they would be if they were in Mexico and Latin America.
In the article “The Virgin of Guadalupe: A Mexican National Symbol” by Eric R. Wolf, the facts are given about the history of the symbol as well as the importance that it plays in the lives of the people of Mexico. This Wolf applies the agnostic approach in his article by the language that he uses. He does not attempt to persuade or dissuade from believing in the Virgin of Guadalupe. Wolf starts out by explaining that the terms he uses do no represent the Mexican people as a whole, “In this paper, I should like to discuss this [Virgin of Guadalupe] Mexican master symbol, and the ideology which surrounds it. In making use of the term ‘master symbol,’ I do not wish to imply that belief in the symbol is common to all Mexicans” (Wolf 2).
The legend of the Virgen de Guadalupe has become a common symbol of hope to many incoming immigrants of Latin American countries. Due to U.S. governmental and economic interventions in Latin American countries, it has caused many people to migrate as refuges and flee unstable environments. These mass migrations have been followed by torturous trails and stories that many times end in death or abuse, however, other times it has allowed refugees to move away and live stable lives in the U.S. However, once in the U.S., these immigrants are faced with discriminatory policy based on false accusations that makes their lives unsafe and unprotected. Therefore, Latinx religious faith becomes a strong component of community for these groups.
Latin American and feminist theologians, artists, and writers have reimagined the sedate and obedient Virgin as an ordinary woman experiencing the joys and challenges of sexuality, work, and motherhood as exemplified by Yolanda López’s “Portrait of the Artist as the Virgin of Guadalupe.” Although the Virgin of Guadalupe has made an impact on the country of Mexico, at the same time, she has also had effects on others parts of the Americas. The apparition did not only convert the whole nation of Mexico to Catholicism, but the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe brought an end to the Aztecs worship of stone gods and the practice of human sacrifice. When the indigenous people embraced Catholicism, the religion of the Spaniards, the two groups discovered a way of living together in relative harmony. In 1737, she was proclaimed patroness of Mexico City, and in 1746, her patronage was accepted by all the territories of New Spain, which included part of present-day California as well as Mexico and regions as far south as Guatemala and El Salvador.

The holiday has spread in recent years from Mexico to America and beyond. It is now celebrated by Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and countless others, spawning a colorful and distinctive artistic tradition that continues to inspire.
Religion is big in Mexico and according to gobalsecurity an online article, 88% of the population identified themselves as Roman Catholicism and 5 % of the population identified themselves as Protestants and Evangelicals. The values of the Mexican people are always around the family. Families are usually large in Mexico and are very conscious of the responsibilities to immediate family members and extended family such as cousins and even close friends. Whenever Mexicans host parties, they make visitors feel welcomed and comfortable which is a large part of the customs and values of the country. The Mexican people believe that any important decision within the family should be taken after all members in the family had their voice heard.
