One of the most surprising election would be the election of 1860. In this election, Lincoln again confronted Douglas, who represented the Northern group of a strongly separated Democratic Party in addition to Breckinridge and Bell. The declaration of Lincoln 's triumph flagged the severance of the Southern states, which since the start of the year had been openly undermining withdrawal if the Republicans picked up the White House.

When Lincoln was instated on March 4, 1861, seven states had withdrawn, and the Confederate States of America had been formally settled, with Jefferson Davis as its chose president.
