Introduction
Who was the best Civil War general, who was the best American General? The discussion and debate of who was better has gone on since the Civil War and will like go on for the rest of the history of the United State. Lee was the South’s accomplished general and Grant was the North’s slow rising average general, If you will. Lee vs Grant will be a discussion for many centuries. While many Americans had many similarities in the 1800’s the two path’s and styles was different. Everything was different. The resources available for battle was likely and deciding factor and outcome of the war more than the generals itself. What they represented was different sides of America. Grant also was educated from a young age. But his passion In his youth, Grant developed a special ability to ride, work with, and control horses. Grant too attended west point. Grant was not a distinguished student as he graduated in the middle of his military class. This would lead to grant to serving as a quartermaster rather than to the cavalry because of his graduating spot from west point. He was in charge of supplies and equipment.

Grant also served in the American-Mexican war, and made a good example for himself. Initially he was not of a infantry role severing as a quartermaster. Grant would eventually get a chance to lead a Calvary attack in the war and was very successful. He learned leadership and tactics and began to establish himself as a young leader. As a note at this point Lee was already well respected and accomplished, while was still young and just getting started.

Setting the stage
The southern slave holding states did not support Lincoln as he opposed the spread of slavery. These southern states said if Lincoln won the 1860 election that they would succeed from the united states forming a new confederate government.
