Well he had much better knowledge with tactics and strategys. Grant beat Lee only because of more men and supplies and also, he truly was a fighter, a tough battle, bad losses, a bad outcome didn't shake him. In that regard, I'd place only Meade and maybe Hooker as "fighters" besides Grant. Third, he did a great job using his subordinates. Under Grant, officers like Sheridan and Sherman saw their potential and flourished as commanders. Fourth, he was probably the best offensive or attacking commander the Union army had (Meade was much stronger as a defender). Fifth, he did a better job than probably any of these commanders at understanding his enemy (Lee) and his limitations. Finally, while he understood the politics (nearly losing his job
