Electronic Medical Record Errors The electronic medical record, EMR, is a systematized collection of medical and health information on a patient that can be accessed and shared in many different areas in healthcare digitally. This is a way to share information easier, faster and supposedly without as many errors as with a paper chart. EMRs allow the flow of information to be accessed from doctor to doctor without need to fax or mail documents that could potentially be lost in transit. Even though EMRs are created to make the process a lot more efficient there are many issues that arise from using them. Many physicians believe that it is difficult to navigate through the systems. Providing in-services to properly train staff and physicians can go a long way with making the system easier to operate. Some say that entering data into the EMR takes your health professionals’ focus from the patient making the experience seem less personable so it takes away from the face to face interaction between the doctor and patient. Streamlining the EMR to the facilities needs and making it more user friendly would alleviate some of the extraneous information. The software is not perfect and is EMRs are considered to be significantly more expensive than anticipated, creating uncertainties about the sustainability of their use. (Friedberg, Crosson, Tutty, 2014). EMRs are vulnerable to crashes and can cause a facility many hours of extra time trying to uses alternate sources and databases to make patients information available. Making sure to keep paper charts filed on-site can help when the computer system is down and you need to refer back to a chart. This is also a problem because the facility has employees scrambling around to find paper charts and the time could be used elsewhere. (Freudenheim,
