Our facility is after and EMR system that is overall easy to use, maintain and cost effective. After analyzing various EMR systems there are several key factors that emerge. In 2012 and then again in 2014, Medscape put together a report about what 18, 474 physicians liked and disliked about the top EHR systems (Kane, 2014). In regards to a long term care facility, a few of the EMR systems jumped to the top of the list as far as ease of use and cost to maintain. We want a system that is both functional and affordable. There are many systems out there that look like they would be easy and cheap to maintain but in the end more time and money is spent on software updates and customer service and support. According to the Medscape EHR report 65% of physicians said that EHR systems improve documentation within their facility (Kane, 2014). While physicians say that these systems improve documentation and other clinical factors within their practice, 70% of them say that it decreases their face to face time with the patients (Kane, 2014). This reason is why an easy to use, easy to learn and easy to maintain system is most conducive to our needs. Chart 1 below compares five electronic health records systems across five variables that a long term care facility would look for in this system of system. There are also the top 5 functions that most facilities will look for in EHR systems (Capterra, 2012). This is an important factor because any system that we install must meet these standards for us to be in compliance with the HITECH Act. These systems also featured billing systems integration, reminders, and the ability to prescribe and also track medication. These features are vital for our long term care facility because they will allow our physicians and nurses to provided quality care our patients need. Along with what we want out of our system there are also other important factors to consider such as ease of use, support, connectivity, usefulness, value and overall satisfaction (Kane, 2014). Medscape’s EHR report also asked physicians to rate these factors on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being poor to 5 being excellent.
