Book Nine from “The Odyssey” Literary Investigation Even though The Odyssey is one of the most read stories in the world its author is still a mystery. Book Nine of The Odyssey is written by Homer. Literary elements are essential to literature because it conveys meaning and appeal to the text. It also provides amplitude and clarity to the text. It helps the reader fully understand the meaning in why the author wrote the text. If used correctly literary elements can dispatch a message within the reading. In order to understand The Odyssey, one must analyze the conflict and sensory imagery that Homer uses to create such a great piece of literature. Book Nine of The Odyssey is known for the story of the Cyclopes that Odysseus and his men come across as they are on their quest to go back to Ithaca. The exposition of book nine is when Odysseus landed on the lawless Cyclops’ island. As Odysseus’s plan is to be friendly to the Polyphemus the Cyclopes, it fails when Polyphemus eats two of Odysseus’s men. This would be considered the rising action. As Odysseus was pouring Polyphemus a drink, Odysseus states “Three bowls I brought him, and he poured them down.”(355). It shows Odysseus’s cleverness by intoxicating Polyphemus. It also shows how Polyphemus likes alcohol. Another example is when Polyphemus threw the hilltop towards Odysseus and his men. As Odysseus was taunting Polyphemus, Odysseus stated, “The blind thing in his doubled fury broke a hilltop in his hands and heaved it after us.” (481-482).
