In the book Night, by Elie Wiesel, there was a very strong shift in the tone just within the first three chapters. “The shopkeepers were doing good business, the students lived among their books, and the children played in the streets”(Weisel 6). It is shown here that they were living ordinary, peaceful lives. “The shadows around me roused themselves as if from a deep sleep and left silently in every direction”(Weisel 14). This is where people began to no longer feel peaceful and began the long journey of fear and worry that would get worse throughout the book.
Eli Wiesel’s story of his experience in concentration camps in the book Night, the emotion in chapter 3 that Wiesel is trying to convey is dreary. Wiesel, who was once a light-hearted boy, loses any feelings he once had causing him to fall into a lifeless body. After being treated like animals and being scared of the unknown, Wiesel felt the world go dark, his “senses were numbed, everything was fading into a fog. We no longer clung to anything. The instincts of self-preservation, of self- defense, of pride, had all deserted us” (2).
Being the last sentence of the book, and out of all the passages I highlighted this one stood out to me and described Wiesel’s experience in just a few simple sentence. He looked at himself for the first time in many years, and did not recognize himself he saw a different person. This showed me that the concentration camps changed him he was a different person inside and out. The events that occurred to him had scared him so much that the man he saw in the mirror wasn’t him, but one who had been drained of life that looked lifeless from the events occurred in the concentration camps. He was weak and this whole passage embodies his weakness and the whole point of the concentration camps.
Chapter One Summary: In chapter one of Night by Elie Wiesel, the some of the characters of the story are introduced and the conflict begins. The main character is the author because this is an autobiographical novel. Eliezer was a Jew during Hitler’s reign in which Jews were persecuted. The book starts out with the author describing his faith.
Death was the best thing that could have happened to Elie WIesel. In his book, night, he has to overcome some of the most gruesome experiences ever read about, and it’s a true story. He had to get over working in terrible conditions, get over losing his family, and forget his future as his faith was lost. To start off, Elie had to get over the unbearable dilemma of losing multiple members of his family. It is unimaginable to lose any family members in such a horrid way, but that was only one of the barriers he had to face.
Elie Wiesel’s “Night” depicts death, obliteration, and anguish while directly depicting the suffering he witnessed during his time at Auschwitz, a concentration camp for Jews during World War II. Within the story, there is an overwhelming amount of times the Jews had been in distress. Many children had been separated from their parents and all of the Jews were taken from their homes. Their suffering seemed endless. They were no longer teachers, homeowners, or priests.
In this book Elie speaks of his hardships and how he survived the concentration camps. Elie quickly changed into a sorrowful person, but despite that he was determined to stay alive no matter the cost. For instance, during the death
Eliezer or “Elie” Wisel was a Romanian-born American Jewish writer, professor, political activist, Nobel Laureate and Holocaust survivor. Elie was also the narrator in the novel Night. A major point discussed by Elie was how we as the future generation should remember the victims of the Holocaust. Wisel points out that “To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time.” In other words, if we don’t learn from history it is bound to repeat itself.
I learned a lot of new information while reading Night, there were many things I didn’t know about the Holocaust before that I know about now. I never knew much about the conditions of the camps or how the people were treated there, I just knew that they were dreadful places. Now I can have an image of the camps in my head, what it looked like for the people who had to live in these horrendous camps. They committed so many execrable acts on people, they performed experiments on people, murdered whoever they wanted, starved people and many more gruesome things. I didn’t realize how bad the conditions really were and how badly the people were treated.
Elie: Throughout the book we see Elie change from a relatively normal teenage school boy and into a emotionally hardened young man who has become so accustomed to death that he rarely gives it a second thought, even if the person dying was a friend . This change took place because of the tortuous conditions that the Nazi´s subjected him to and that he lost so many family members and friends along the way. My passage shows Elie at a time when he is just starting his journey, yet you can tell that the concentration camps and the Nazi´s have already had a very serious effect on him. ¨He must have died, trampled under the feet if the thousands of men who followed us.
In the memoir “Night” Elie Wiesel writes about what he experienced in the holocaust. He went from his house to ghettos and then to concentration camps and the entire time he had to wear the star of david. Elie was in the concentration camps and went through many events from the time he was forced to go to the ghettos until the last people including him were let free. Elie’s views on God changed his identity after he lost his trust in God and caring towards others. Throughout the memoir Elie along with his father and the other Jews changed due to how they were treated.
Throughout the text, Elie creates a sense of normalcy in the camp by glancing over routinely details and emphasizing critical points that reflect his emotions. After the hanging of Pipel, Elie describes the soup that he ate saying, “That night, the soup tasted of corpses” (Wiesel 65). Wiesel describes the soup as being different from usual. The change of taste represents the feeling of Elie and how is full of sorrow after the hanging of Pipel. After injuring himself, Elie describes his food in the infirmary, “Actually, being in the infirmary was not bad at all: we were entitled to good bread, a thicker soup.
In the novel Night, the word night contained great significance and has very deep meaning. Elie’s memory of everything in this time period is dark and tragic. It is called Night to show what he felt like during this whole time period, and it felt like one long, painful night to him. Night represents the pain, fear, death, and darkness from Elie’s past. “We stared at the flames in the darkness.
