People's circumstances and experiences shape the way they handle life. As humans evolved, there has been religion or God integrated. Many people choose to put their faith in God, even though he could fail them. Elie Wiesel's memoir Night shows the life of young Elie and his father after being taken to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. Before the concentration camp, Elie was very dedicated to his religion. After being brought to Auschwitz, Elie fought for his survival and later began to question God. Elie ultimately loses faith in God and wonders why God would do this to him. Elie and his father had just arrived, and this is when Elie's father realized their fate. Men started reciting the prayer Kaddish; Elie became confused because people don't usually recite Kaddish for themselves. Elie began wondering why he should sanctify someone who caused many deaths. "’Yisgadal, veyiskadash, shmey raba...May His name be celebrated and sanctified'… whispered my father. For the first time, I felt anger rising within me. Why should I sanctify His name?... What was there to thank Him for?” (Wiesel 33). Elie is confused about why everyone is praying about death. Elie then realizes that there is a chance that he might not live after the war. He wonders why people think God could help them if they ended up in this situation in the first place. On Rosh Hashanah, people fasted and prayed to God. Elie wanted to rebel because he questioned why God created the camps and killed many people. “How could I say to Him: Blessed be Thou, Almighty, Master of the Universe, who chose us among all nations to be tortured day and night, to watch as our fathers, our mothers, our brothers end up in the furnaces?” (Wiesel 67). Elie wonders why Jews are being treated so poorly. He also wonders how someone that he worshipped for so long could turn on him.
