Elie Wiesel is able to appoint the role of an antagonist to almost anybody, he does so on page sixty-seven of Night relaying the allegory of malice within a single man’s actions. It says, sometime around the middle of the book, victims of the concentration camps were on their way to the center of Germany. One of the workmen had decided to throw a piece of bread into the wagon the men were in. The men became violent for this piece of bread and fought to the death for some measly crumbs. ( Pg 67 Wiesel ).
In chapter one of Elie Wiesel’s memoir, Night, his purpose behind his use of excessive tragic irony is to display the astonishing amount of innocence and unawareness the Jews have about the Germans’ plans. For instance, Wiesel displays the Jews’ ignorance when he writes, ““There was joy, yes joy. People must have thought there could be no greater torment in God’s hell than that of being stranded here, on the sidewalk” (16). This exemplifies how the Jews truly believe that the situation was going to get better. This is tragically ironic because their situation was not going to get better, it was going to get much worse.
Wiesel used foreshadowing in the story of Mrs. Schachter by having her yelling about a fire. Of course, no one knew of what she was talking about, so they quieted her. She continues to yell later as well and so the young men gagged her. When they arrived at Auschwitz Mrs. Schachter was screaming about the flames and the fire. When the train stopped, everyone jumped out avoiding the strike of a stick, they thenk smelled the stench of burning flesh from the fire.
Moreover, Eilis's troubled relationship with her mother intensifies her sense of exile. Her marriage is the result of her entrapping relationship with a mother who insists on maintaining her power over her into her adulthood. Eilis's return to her mother and motherland serves to enhance her dislocation. Her mother seems strange to her. Eilis feels trapped in the house as she has felt trapped in Brooklyn.
While reading this I felt the suspension and intensity of the story building. It made me think deeper about Josef and his past. How could someone that seems so nice be something so evil at one point? Everyone has had dark time in there life, but can someone so evil completely and fully become a better person? I wonder what happened in Josef’s past to make him so brain washed to the point where he believed that being a Nazi soldier was something he should do.
Eliezer Wiesel and Jeanne Wakatsuki have very many things in common through rough experiences in the camps they were in. Eliezer and Jeanne have a lot in common like how they both changed personality’s throughout the story, how they showed fear in many situations, and lastly they both learned from these hard experiences. Even though Eliezer and Jeanne can relate in many ways they are actually quite different and experienced different things. For instance, Eliezer was not obstinate like Jeanne. Also, there was a point in the novel where he was completely alone while Jeanne had her family with her throughout the whole time in the camp.

In “Night” we follow the journey of a Jewish teenage boy named Elie Wiesel who is taken to a concentration camp toward the end of the second world war. In the autobiography “Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, we follow the story of a young Iranian girl named Marji. In “Persepolis”, Marji has to face adversity during a time of war and sorrow after the islamic revolution.
Wiesel begins to use darker comparisons as the novel progresses, which begin to document how circumstances were changing and negatively affecting victims. An instance of this is when he describes the hangings that he witnessed, upon which he reflects that the soup tasted like corpses that evening (Wiesel 72). Wiesel uses this comparison to depict one of the most gruesome scenes throughout the book, which symbolizes how these horrific events had such a great impact on him. He conveys how the hangings affected him by addressing how this event lingered on his mind for prolonged periods of time. In addition, another example where Wiesel 's figurative language marks a decline in optimism is when the victims must decide whether or not to fast during Yom Kippur, but Wiesel states that due to the food rations at the camps, "The whole year was Yom Kippur" (Wiesel 76).

During these years of war the Jewish prisoners had to experience horrific starvation, the daily labour work in concentration camps, and the question of his faith in God. Yom Kippur is celebrated by Jews to demonstrate their faith in God and many show their faith by fasting on the tenth of Tishrei. In this memoir, Elie Wiesel uses imagery in order to develop the presence of animal-like behavior on people when they are being dehumanized. At this point of the story, Elie and the other prisoners are in a wagon traveling to a different concentration camp, and they are trying to survive in inhuman conditions. To begin, Wiesel describes, “We were given bread… We threw ourselves on it… Someone had the idea of quenching his thirst by eating snow.”
Night is neither good nor evil, darkness the same. We humans do not fear the darkness or the night itself. We are afraid of what is lurking behind the curtain absent of light. It is fear of the unknown that scares us because it is foreign, something we cannot control. Wiesel’s own story, of which he names Night, plays with a different context of the word.
Wiesel often uses complex similes to advance the plot of his memoir and add a meaningful perspective to the idea of what it means to be human in a psychological and emotional sense. For example, towards the beginning of the memoir, in the cattle car on the way to Auschwitz, Wiesel utilizes figurative language to describe the condition of the Jewish prisoners as being infected with madness: “Our very skin was aching.
