Elijah Anderson spent much of his career doing ethnographic studies in the poor, inner-city communities of Philadelphia. From his field research, he came to believe that people, especially young black men who lived in the most economically depressed, drug-infested, and crime-ridden sections of the city, had to contend with weakened rules of civil law. In the place of the usual civil laws governing people’s behavior evolved a “code of the street” (Anderson, 1999, p. 9). Anderson argues that at the core of this code is a set of informal rules organized around a search for respect that governs public social
In David Bartholomae’s “Inventing the University,” he argues that professors at universities should not expect incoming students to adopt the language of the University at an early stage (406) because of how difficult the discourse is. When students start their academic career at the university, they all start at the “commonplace” and as “basic writers” (405), which means students start at the same place because they are not expected to know the language that the university speaks in (406). Due to being in such a new and advanced community, students start writing what the audience (usually their professors) wants to hear rather than what they want to write. One way Bartholomae strengthens his argument is by providing student examples, one of

We notice a change in the Prophets character as he becomes more and more invested and influenced by the religious group. In fact, he manages to take complete control and convinces everyone in the airport that they will be safe. This is one example of how he manipulates people: “My people and I, “he said, “when we speak of the light, we speak of order. This place of order. People with chaos in their hearts cannot abide here.”

In Helena Maria Viramontes’ novel, Under the Feet of Jesus, Estrella starts off as angsty and confused, but then shifts to a state of contentment and understanding, caused by life experiences. These character traits are revealed through the selection of detail, figurative language, and tone. Initially, Estrella is immediately characterized as “very angry” when she finds Perfecto’s “foreign” toolbox. She uses a tone of confusion that illustrates her unfamiliarity with the objects in the tool box by using words such as “funny-shaped”, and using a simile comparing her confusion with the tools to the alphabet which Estrella “could not decipher”.

If we ignore, slight or reject the messages God gives through His prophets, we are rejecting God—not the humans God uses to deliver His instructions!
Saul’s Corruption I’m broken. Each individual in one way or another deals with pain, no matter how small or big, it still affects us. The painful moments of my life to this day still haunts me, occasionally I revisit the flashbacks of my life in the past. At times I fought against God and his word, refusing to listen to his voice. It is hard to accept and move on from the past experiences.
