Before August 18th, 1920, only men could vote in the United States. One person that helped to right this wrong was Carrie Chapman Catt. In Carrie Chapman Catt’s address to Congress on women’s suffrage, she uses logos, pathos, and other rhetorical devices to convince Congress to give women more rights. One tool that helps make this speech as effective as it is is logos. She demonstrates logos when introducing the second reason as to why women’s suffrage is inevitable.
4. Both Abigail Adams and Stanton are making it understood that change for women is long overdue. Both selections have a specific highlight on the “tyrannical” way men have ran their society and with no “impunity”. Even though the message included gaining the support of the people to achieve a common cause of women getting the right to vote, Florence Kelley developed her argument through the community’s status dealing with child labor. The use of rhetorical strategies persuaded the audience -the Association accompanied by men and women across the country- to act in order to discontinue the practice of child labor. Additionally it conveniences the audience of the importance of the women’s point of view in the government. Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Address on Women’s Rights” was an influential piece of rhetoric that was an important part of the fight for women’s rights and still remains relevant to the political and religious bodies of the 21st century. This poignant expression about women’s rights was just the beginning of a long fight for women’s rights that continues to this day, but Elizabeth Cady Stanton also endorsed an idea of reinterpreting scripture to extinguish the oppression of women and other minority groups. In Seneca Falls Keynote Address, Elizabeth Cady Stanton uses anaphora’s, metaphors and allusion to persuade the audience to show that women should be treated equally just like men and should be more appreciated. Due to this speech it started the whole revolution in making sure women would be granted more rights as American citizens.
Men should have absolute rule over society. This was the mindset back when women's rights activists were considered rare and unorthodox. In A Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions, Elizabeth Cady Stanton rejects the status quo and finds solutions to the overbearing problems she sees within society. A concept that has greatly been dreamt over throughout history has been challenged, by a woman. Elizabeth Cady Stanton exerts repetition, allusion, and pathos to express her opinions in favor of increasing women's rights.
Throughout history men have oppressed women taking away their rights and being treated as second class citizens. In 1848,at the Senca fallls convention the Declartion of sentiments was signed to gain equal .The Author Cady Stanton based the Declartion of sentiments on the Declartion of Independance and through the use of anaphora she conveys the idea that womenhave been oppresed and should have the same rights as any other citizen. Throughout the text Stanton uses anaphora to great extent to demonstrate the way women have been treated as second class citizens. There are many examples of this in the text,but one that shows that women had no voice is:”He has compelled here to submit to laws, in the formation of which she has had no voice.”
Many men do not comprehend the importance of women’s rights, therefore in order to convince the people with power, Stanton compares the fight for equality to the prestigious and impactful founding fathers. Stanton structures the beginning of her argument almost exactly the same as the Declaration of Independence; however, Stanton changes certain phrases and words to express her message for the importance of women’s suffrage and “...that all men and women are created equal...” (Stanton). Since America is founded on freedom and independence, individuals are compelled to agree with Stanton’s message of equality. If people object to Stanton’s views, they are also rejecting the importance of the founding fathers' necessity for independence due to the structuring of her message.
Author Elizabeth Cady Stanton logically and ethically argued for the equal treatment of women in her “Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions”. She laid out examples of their inequality such as, “He has compelled her to submit to laws, in the formation of which she had no voice” (Stanton, 2007, p.59). This exemplifies the treatment of women and the lack of equality shown to the women of her society. Making laws for a whole group of individuals without considering their individuality ruins not only that concept but also the function of equality. One group of people should not be making rules for another without the input of the said group.
Before the 1900s, women were portrayed as fragile individuals incapable of taking part in any hard work or making any decisions for themselves. Their dreams of taking part in the economy, politics, and society were denied simply due to their gender. It wasn’t until suffragists such as Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton decided to take a stand in 1848 and hold a meeting known as the Seneca Falls Convention. This was the first step towards a change for women’s rights that had lasting effects on American society. This suffrage movement grew influence throughout the Civil War and even post-war to the point where women all over the United States joined the suffragists in fighting for thier rights.
