Stephen Jay Gould, in his essay “Some Close Encounters of a Mental Kind,” convinces us that memory can be a blessing however, can also be a danger. Gould gives an example of when he visited Devils Tower, Wyoming both when he was fifteen years old and when he was older. When he was fifteen he was told by his father that he could see the Devils Tower from miles away in which he was sure he saw. When he went back he was older and realized you can not see the Devils tower from afar because it is covered by mountains. He was sure it was the Devils Tower, however he soon realized what he had seen was Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.
Mary Dyer was born in England in 1611. She married William Dyer and went to Massachusetts in 1635. She was a good friend with Anne Hutchinson and shared the same views; they were Quakers. She was the mother of 8 children, two died shortly after birth. Mary had a stillborn daughter that was deformed and they buried in secret, because it was believer that either if a women preached or listen to a woman preacher their child would be deformed or that the deformed child was consequences of the parents sins.

The aspect of psychology and law research from this week’s course material is most relevant to the topic of perception and memory. The memory has different stages the first is encoding the process of entering perception into memory.

The Great Depression affected people all around the country in various fashions. An interview with Katherine Burton, a 20 year-old college student at the birth of the Depression, revealed that this time period made her question her future; if she would ever have a job, and greatly affected her family. Burton provided background to how her life was at the start of the Great Depression.
