Elizabeth Proctor - The Crucible. The Salem Witch Trials. The Salem Witch Trials was a period of time in which people of Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 were being accused of witchcraft. It all began after a group of girls claimed to be possessed by the devil and started accusing locals of witchcraft, one of the accused even being hanged that month, over several months more and more people were being accused of witchcraft. One of the accused is Elizabeth Proctor. Elizabeth was 40 at the time of the witch trials. She was married to John Proctor and worked at the tavern he owned. Abigail and Elizabeth wasn’t portrayed as good in real life or the movies, it was rumored that her husband was having an affair and Elizabeth knew about it by firing Abigail. In real life it is said that Elizabeth held a grudge against Abigail but over time had let it go but how the film portrayed Elizabeth didn’t like the girl at all. As the trial progressed Elizabeth and John’s were sentenced to hang but Elizabeth was allowed to stay due to her being pregnant, giving her time, notably saving her life. John was hanged with a few others and Elizabeth was next but that was until Governor Phillip's wife was accused and issued a general order freeing all those accused including Elizabeth Proctor. But all was not good with Elizabeth as her husband had written her out of his will and she was penniless but after some time John Proctors will was accepted as probate and was split amongst his children and Elizabeth giving her some settlement but after that Elizabeth disappeared with her children appearing again after she had remarried in 1699. Elizabeth Proctor was one of the many people affected by the Salem witch trial, but she was only about one in a few who actually survived it after being
