Alexandra Torres September 12, 2016 English 11 5 period The Crucible Essay In the play, The Crucible , by Arthur Miller, reputation plays an important role.The people of Salem fear that the sins of their friends will ruin their name. Many characters in the play base their actions on the desire to protect their reputations.For example, Reverend Parris only seems to care about his reputation instead of his sick daughter Betty.Abigail Williams tries to save her reputation so people won't know she a whore and only wants Proctor to herself. John Proctor tries to stick up for his friends so that he won't look like a bad person after confessing he had an affair with Abigail. Reverend Parris is known as being the churchly figure and seems to care more about his reputation.After seeing the girls dancing in the forest, Parris recognizes the possibility that the witchcraft being practiced in his own house, and he worries about the possible danger to his reputation if the people of the town notice …show more content…

Parris is afraid that a rumor has been going around and might ruin his name around the town,but most important that Elizabeth Proctor,John proctor wife has been telling everyone in the town that she not a proper girl. Abigail is selfish, and a magnificent liar and also only cares about her reputation and trying to get attention. Abigail had an affair with John Proctor.She doesn't want anyone one to know that she had an affair with proctor "Abigail: She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her! Let her turn you like a—" (23). Abigail is accusing of Elizebeth for trying ruining her reputation.At the same time she wants to have revenge on Elizebeth and have Proctor to her
