The Protestant Reformation had a massive sway on the visual arts in Northern European art. One of the main changes was that holy imagery was no longer the most significant feature in art. Iconoclasm took over as Protestant reformers encouraged the removal of pious images. The patrons of the north became more captivated in secular concepts and ideas, and they also wanted their messages about ethics to be shown in fewer godly behaviors. The Reformation led artists to seek patrons outside of the church; and several different types of themes were requested during this time.

In Elizabeth Bishop's “One Art”, she explores the themes of memory and sadness. In the first stanza, the speaker says “So many things seem filled with the intent to be lost is that their loss is no disaster” which shows that she understands some things are meants to be lost. This is important because in the end of the poem, she wants to believe that all losses can be accepted. The line in the third stanza “None of these will bring disaster” is read as if she is trying to convince herself that loss isn't a “disaster.”

Even after it is clear how immense the calamity which one has fallen into, some simply brush it of and attempt to catch a glimpse of the optimism in the situation; however slight. In the poem “One Art”, Elizabeth opens up her poem in a rather light tone with a spoonful of irony which only later magnifies the distress which she feels of her loss. The end rhyme and syntax form a moderately careless tone which is essentially overshadowed by the author’s repentant attitude in the last stanza.
