The whole concept of Nick Sousanis 's comic "Unflattening" pertains to how one can see different things and read the social world. While the social world of mankind is shaped based on the choices our ancestors made, do social patterns and behaviors really have to be a certain way? Perhaps, there is a flatness not yet scene that allows for this blinded vision and machine like operation which does not question repetition. A main focal point being stressed. Essentially, a main point Sousanis wants us to note is this: (1) change our perception in things, (2) changed perception creates a change in action, thus (3) a change to the world.
What if the world didn’t think? What would happen if people didn’t take what they learned from past experiences, whether it had a negative or positive effect, and apply it to future situations. What would happen if people made decisions simply based on the fact that they wanted to fit in, without thinking about what consequences it could have on them. Passing, a novel by Nella Larsen, addresses the issue of race by telling the story of two African American women - Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield - who represent different aspects of passing1. In the novel, passing refers to the process of crossing the color line, where a light skinned person who belongs to the black racial community enjoys white privilege2. However, people who pass struggle with double consciousness as they long to honor their race without necessarily being associated with it3. The novel is highly invested in ambiguity to show the fluidity and complexity of race, and how it paves the way for passing4. The Rogerian outline of an essay creates an effective argument in the aspect that it acknowledges two opposing viewpoints of the matter in an unbiased way. By doing this, the author is able to let the reader understand other perspectives towards the topic, without offending or disregarding their stance.. Creating a compromise, or a common ground, between the two lets the audience shift from their original views and expand their thoughts. This way of formatting an argument is useful when discussing emotional topics. If arguing for animal testing, for example, it would benefit the author if they used the Toulmin method because it is so controversial and emotional, seeing that it deals with the lives of living creatures.
Robert J. Sternberg is a professor of Psychology and vice president at Oklahoma State University. Sternberg states, “To act ethical, individuals must go through a series of steps”. He presupposes teaching these 8 steps is just as important as teaching students how to pass a test. The Popol Vuh is a cultural narrative of the Quiché people that blends folklore, mythology, and historical accounts. The contents of the Popol Vuhhave been relayed through oral tradition for many years, and its written form has suffered many losses following Spanish colonization of Latin America. Spanish colonizers destroyed nearly all Quiché texts and codices, including the Popol Vuh. Thus, the earliest known version of the Popol Vuh that exists is a Spanish translation by Reverend Father Franzisco Ximénez, Parish Priest for the Royal Patronage of the Town of Santo Tomás Chuilá, Mexico. Father Ximénez’s translation is the foundational text for all future translations of the Popol Vuh, including this edition, translated to English by Allen J. Christenson.
