After all they had been through in twenty five years of being apart, Newland is unable to bring himself to see Ellen again. After allowing his son to go see Ellen alone, Newland decides not to meet with her, preserving the images of Ellen from the past rather than allowing a new image to take its place. Though they were so close after so much time, the distance had truly grown too great after living with it for so long. This central paradox is directly addressed by Ellen when she says “‘We’re near each other only if we stay far from each other’” (175). This reality of the situation is the true issue with why they are unable to happily be together.
She has changed so much through the book. She has changed from being so strong to being very trustworthy and soft. You can observe her changes through her actions, relationships, and problems. She is such a lovable character. I would love to have her in my life.
Symbolism, as used in this movie, added a large amount of depth to the movie and individual scenes. The most prominent example of this can be seen with the depiction of Ellen. Throughout the movie the costuming and makeup used by Lily Collins in her portrayal of Ellen reflects the status of Ellen’s mental and physical health. In many scenes where Ellen creates strong relationships, she is dressed in bright clothes and has makeup that brings out her features making her look more attractive. Contrary though, in scenes where Ellen takes a step back her clothes become drab and layered.
