The point of this essay is to celebrate the incredible talent behind Wicked's
William Shakespeare is arguably the best playwright to ever live. He added many literary terms to his plays to enhance them such as puns, metaphors, similes, character foils, etc. In the Play “Much Ado About Nothing” by William Shakespeare, Beatrice and Hero are foils of each other because they have different views on love, different personalities, and react differently to situations. Beatrice and Hero are foils of each other because they have different views on love. Beatrice has trouble committing to love, but Hero commits to love and will marry anyone her father tells her to marry.
In the movie of The wizard of Oz Dorothy Gale is surrounded by characters foils. A character foil is a character that has more or more of the main characters qualities. Toto is a character foil for Dorothy, because he is caring. Toto ran back to the dark forest to get Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow to show them how to get to Dorothy in order to rescue her. Toto demonstrates to the audience that he is caring because he risks the chance of getting captured again, but Toto is a character foil of Dorothy because he is caring and that is one of Dorothy’s many qualities.
This can be exemplified by many of the characters throughout the play, such as Abigail, Proctor, and Danforth, as they eventually ruin one another in the process. The chaos begins after the young girls were caught in the forest, dancing under the moonlight. The ritual that the girls have done, which included; drinking the chicken’s blood and boiling frogs, was to get rid of the Proctors wife, Elizabeth. Shortly after the girls got caught by the Abbigail’s uncle, Parris, they blamed everything on the Tituba, Parris’ slave, and the devils influence on them. Abbigail, and the rest of the girls begin to accuse innocent people for “sending the Devil” on them.
The Wizard of Oz and Wicked are both very successful and well-known broadway musicals. Both of these musicals are based off of the same story, but each give a slightly different meaning to it. While they are both based on a similar tale, these two broadway musicals have many characteristics that are similar and differ from each other. This paper will compare and contrast the characters, theme, and plot.
This notion of Elphaba having green skin from birth was introduced in Maguire’s novel, and carried forward to the musical. This paper will be discussing various theories and relations that might explain this introduction of colour to Wicked. Relation to Empathy Elphaba’s green skin is a catalyst for audience members to empathize more with her. Many audience members are able to feel empathy for Elphaba who is bullied over her skin colour, something she has no control over, a social outcast due to her looks. Many have had similar experiences with bullying and not feeling like they belong.
Flat and static, these persons’ character traits are not that fully developed and their personalities did not change throughout the story. Although this is the case, these people are essential in the characterization and formation of the plot. For example, FOIL characters Darlene and Ralph both function to highlight certain traits of Betsy Ann’s personality. Darlene, unlike Betsy Ann, is a very unruly and liberal character. She is not as controlled or intently looked after by her guardian.
In Conclusion, Wicked is a perfectly written musical, filled with both mysterious and magical effects that bring a type of meaning and purpose to the musical. There are two types of stories: the first is the type that after you witness it, everyone in the entire world must know about it. The second
Good and evil motifs repeat throughout the play, with good following those who are innocent and evil following those who accuse others of witchcraft. Due to the repetitiveness of these two ideas, some people start good and become evil, while others never
Nessarose and I Nessarose is the Wicked Witch of the East. Nessa and her sister Elphaba have a very sisterly relationship. The way Nessa is taken care of by her sister, gets embarrassed by her family and is daddy’s angel proves Nessa from “Wicked” by Stephen Schwartz and myself are similar and different. Sometimes family can be embarrassing.
Wicked is famous for a long history, mighty messages and admirable songs. Wicked is a splendid show and have a long history. First, the story of Wicked is about two young witches. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another young woman named Elphaba, born with emerged-green skin-smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing extraordinary talent.
This song shows a young girl who is portrayed as having a dorky nerdy look. Also, it shows a girl that is opposite of her, who is a pretty brunette known by the highschool kids. The “nerdy” girl is in love with a football player, who she believes will never have a chance with, because he is with another girl. “Taylor swift” has a crush on a boy who is blind to see that she really loved her and not the girl he is with who is portrayed as a “popular” Brunette. This is an important aspect to Taylor Swift because she is known to sing love stories that she hears about or experience herself.
The plot runs from before the start of the Wizard of Oz and then proceeds alongside it, finishing with the supposed death of the Wicked Witch. It re-tells Elphaba’s story and shows how her differences rendered her a scapegoat, allowing the government of Oz to turn the population against her when she hadn’t really done anything wrong. Elphaba’s differences and the people’s reaction to her are obvious symbols of racial prejudice. This is again seen through Doctor Dillamond, an Goat and professor of History at the university, who tells that the Animals in Oz are losing their rights and their powers of speech. This essay will explore racial prejudice in the musical WICKED, analysing the songs and scenes where Doctor Dillamond and Elphaba interact with the other characters in the production to show how the theme is conveyed.
When I first heard about Wicked, I was 14 years old and clueless about the world of musical theatre. It wasn't until the next year when I saw this show live that I had completely been changed for good. As I saw the show just mere months after deciding that I wanted to pursue performance after my O levels, Wicked truly did a number on me. I remember sitting there at the end of act 1 where Elphaba is up in the air belting about how no one is going to stand in her way of chasing her dreams just awestruck during the intermission. I even took my phone out and made a note about how there was truly a difference watching Defying Gravity on a screen and live.
Main characters that the audience is meant to admire, like Aladdin and Jasmine, have Western features, lighter skin, and American accents, while nefarious or impoverished characters like Jafar and shopkeepers have beards, hooked noses, and thick, Middle Eastern accents. Jafar’s evil is further manifested in his curly beard and traditional clothing—while Aladdin is clean-shaven, mostly shirtless, and very hetero. These kinds of audiovisual cues are not accidents in the
