Emily Dickinson is widely recognized as one of the most influential female poets of the Nineteenth century. Her unique poems and writings introduced a new form of poetry that has had a major influence in modern day literature. Emily Dickinson was born on December 10, 1830, in Amherst, Massachusetts, the first daughter of Edward Dickinson and Emily Norcross. Emily Dickinson came from a family with deep roots in New England, her grandfather, Samuel Dickinson, was well known as the founder of Amherst College. Her father, Edward Dickinson, worked at Amherst and served as a state legislator, and later married Emily Norcross in 1828. Emily and her siblings were raised with values centered around politics and education, they were also expected to live by their father’s religious beliefs. Emily Dickinson attended Amherst Academy for seven years and then attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary for a year. After dropping out of school due to extreme homesickness, Dickinson isolated herself and rarely was seen out in public. Since she spent most of her time at home, and had few visitors, she dedicated her time to writing. Characterized by simple, short lines with few rhyming words, she focused on her word-choice and metaphors. The style of her writing resembles that of a Modernist and Realism writer, because she contributed a blend of psychological insight and focus of nature and being to her poems. During her lifetime, Emily only published seven of her numerous poems, it was not until after her death on May 15, 1886, that her sister, Lavinia, found her poems and published the first book of Emily’s poems.
