Freedom of Pen Poetry is indeed the form of literature with the most freedom because it is the embodiment of the author’s emotions; it is a white canvas that reels in the imagination of the author. By writing thoughts and expanding upon them, taking into consideration the format and phrases that best capture the author’s subject, creates poetry that will satisfy the author. Through the carefully woven lines of their poems the authors express their opinion on the topics that discomfort them. The author’s purpose of My Mistress’ Eyes, 'Twas warm — at first — like Us — and Dover Beach are best revealed through the poems’ tones. According to the Poetry Foundation, an accredited website on poets and poetry, Dickinson’s high-notch analyzing skills enabled her to find self- expression via the interaction of pen and paper. For instance, the passing of Leonard Humphrey, the principal of the academy that Dickinson attended, greatly affected her due to their close relationship. To Dickinson, poetry was a manner of self-expression, thus her attitude toward her subject needed to be extremely prevalent throughout the entirety of her writing, so the comparisons she made revealed the tone she felt toward the topic. Consequently, for ‘Twas warm — at first — like Us — she addresses winter to depict the indifference that the icy weather has. Winter does not notice nor care for the dead barren landscapes it creates and, in a similar manner, death acts the same, as it spreads from head to toe it conquers and ceases all signs of living. Unlike My Mistress’ eyes and Dover Beach, Dickinson’s poem has an indifferent attitude toward cold death, so in that aspect she is like the frost that takes over the warm body because she too does not care what happens to the corpse, as it is no longer
