Just a Girl “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself”
-Joseph Campbell In my opinion this quote by Joseph Campbell clearly embodies the essence what it means to be a hero and Emma Watson clearly exemplifies this quote. Emma has gone from a little girl acting and directing in all the plays in elementary to becoming one of the most well-known,well-respected and influential names of the twenty-first century. Although her acting career is incredibly astonishing in itself, Emma Watson has managed to make a name for herself outside of being a celebrity and has become a hero for humanity.
According to the World Bank only 19% of the seats in national parliament in the United States are held by women and In Australlia a woman makes 18.2% less than a man for the same exact job. It is statistics like these that drove Emma to launch the United Nations Women campaign HeForShe which has a goal of inspiring men and boys to advocate for the ending of the gender inequality that women and girls face all around the world every day. Another reason why Emma Watson should be considered a hero is because of her refusal to conform. Society expects women to do all the cooking and the cleaning, just stay at home and raise a family, and let the men do all the work. Emma Watson openly disregards these misogynistic idea and does whatever she wants. Emma is breaking down barriers for women all over the world. In a TED Talks snowboarder Amy Purdy said “If my life were a book and I was the author how would I like my story to go”.
