Emmett Till The murder of Emmett Till was a big part of the Civil Rights. Back then it was easy for a white man to get away with doing things to colored people because only white people were on the jury.The way Till was murdered was such a horrible way to die. He got punished for doing something that he didn’t know was against the law. Emmett Till was just an ordinary African American boy. He was born on July 25,1941, in Chicago Illinois. He grew up in Illinois and knew how he was able to act. Him and his mom never really traveled anywhere. At the age of 5 he got struck with polio but made a full recovery. It wasn’t right that whites could get away with any crime but if a colored person even said anything wrong to a white person they could get beat to death or even go to prison. It was said to be separate but equal when in reality it wasn’t equal. The whites thought that the colored were more dumb and not as good as them. The Till murder was the first big racial story after the Brown vs Board of Education decision. Everybody heard about it no matter where they were. It was in the paper and in magazines. People talked about among themselves and wanted to do something about it. Nobody knew how bad things really were until they heard about what happened Emmett Till. Things changed but it took a lot of time and effort. Nine years later, Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. By the law people wouldn’t be able to treat the colored any different. They would be able to use the same bathrooms and stores as the whites. Some people were glad things had changed but then there were others that were mad and didn’t want things to change. Some people still treated the colored people like they used to because they wanted things to stay the way they
