Emmett Till was like any other boy who helped his single mother with responsibilities. Mamie Till, was an exceptional mother who worked long hours for the Air Force as well as juggling to raise Emmett by herself. He grew up in Chicago where the neighborhood thrived in black-owned businesses. For schooling, he attended McCosh Grammar school, an all black school where his childhood friends described him as, “...a funny guy all the time. He had a suitcase of jokes that he liked to tell. He loved to make people laugh” (history.com). In the summer of 1955, Till’s uncle, Mose Wright came to visit the family. At the end of Wright’s visit he planned on taking Till’s cousin with him to Money, Mississippi. Emmett loved to have fun with his cousins so when he heard of this, he begged his mother to accompany his uncle. They had just arrived from a business trip and Carolyn Bryant explained to them her accusations about the about Till. She explained to her husband and brother that,“Emmett had grabbed her hand, she pulled away, and he followed her behind the counter, clasped her waist, and, using vulgar language, told her that he had been with white women before”(Perez-Pena). Enraged, the two men abducted Till in Wright’s home at approximately 2:30 in the morning. They showed up at Wright’s home and he cried out, pleading for his nephews life. Despite his cries, they took Till and forced him into their vehicle. It was said that the two men forced Till to carry a 75-pound cotton gin by the Tallahatchie River. They then demanded for him to strip off his clothes. The brutal murder of Till began, as Bryant and Milam beat the 14-year-old, Emmett Till, nearly to death, gouged out his eye, then shot him in the head (A+E
